Kids' Clothing at Electric Ladyland

I was browsing through the Junk Food Clothing collection at Electric Ladyland and I came across a few great t-shirts that really bring me back to my youth.  Remember the Green Giant from the TV commercials?  "Ho, ho, ho, Green Giant!"  The tee smartly reminds us to eat our greens just like the ad did.

Or this amazing vintage-looking Cookie Monster t-shirt?  I was a great fan of Sesame Street in my youth.  Too bad they don't have a Big Bird shirt though, because he was my favorite.  He was so wise, unlike the wild and wacky Cookie Monster.

And Electric Ladyland's Tweety t-shirt is very fetching and would suit my eldest stepdaughter even now at her ripe old age of 22.

The website has an impressive array of name-brand clothing for kids and the prices weren't too bad either.  The t-shirts that I've mentioned above were only $23 and are all part of the company's newly-launched line of kids' clothing.

Free Web Hosting

What’s better than getting a good deal on something?  What’s better than getting something at a great, low price?  Free, of course.  There’s nothing better than getting a quality produce or service and paying nothing for it.  And that’s exactly what Easy CGI are offering right now.  All sign-ups that go through this special promotional link will receive one whole year of free web hosting.  This promotion is part of their Summer Blowout and has no gimmicks or hidden costs.

Included with the free year of Windows web hosting is 24/7 phone support, 99.9% uptime, web traffic reports, endless set-up tutorials and an amazing one-step script installation tool to help you install some of the internet’s most popular application.  Easy CGI make it easy to say goodbye to “Page not found” and to “our offices are presently closed”.  Any website owner knows that those two things are just about as bad as it gets.

Had I known of this promotion before I recently purchased a web-hosting package with another company, I might have saved myself a chunk of money.  I have numerous websites and a fair amount of experience in choosing a hosting company.  Easy CGI offer everything a site designer could need, all in included in the price.  Domain privacy (love it), MySql (need it) and unlimited FTP account (very convenient) are all included in each of Easy CGI’s web hosting packages.  And a minimum of 350 Gb of space!

I should’ve gone with Easy CGI.

Halloween Contact Lenses

All the dollar stores around here have brought out their Halloween supplies, which makes me start to consider my costume once again.  I would say that Halloween is my favorite holiday but I have been disappointed over the last few years, having small children, that I haven’t been able to enjoy it like I once did.  In the past, I’ve been the devil, a vampire, I’ve even been “dead”.  I loved dressing up a Gene Simmons of KISS.  I really must find the pictures of that year!

I once looked into buying specialty contact lenses for a costume but I found the price of them and the limited selection to be uninspiring.  But that was about 15 years ago now.  Pre-internet!  The choices now are impressive and the fact that purchases can be made online really brings the cost down.

Sanders Contacts does Halloween Contact Lenses for just  $49.95 per pair with free shipping if you purchase four or more boxes.  And the lenses aren’t disposable.  They can be worn for one full year and they come in 11 fancy styles.  Cat eyes, black eyes, wild fire and more.  The creepiest eyes, I think, are the white outs.

Novelty contact lenses are a great Halloween accessory because not many people have them.  I would certainly stand out in a crowd wearing these!

Eye of the Dolphin

In theatres August 24th is the award-winning movie Eye of the Dolphin, starring Carly Schroeder in the lead role.  She plays fourteen-year old Alyssa who goes to live with her father following the death of her mother.  Her father lives in the Bahamas and works as a dolphin research scientist.  It seems that they don’t along very well, leaving Alyssa feeling isolated and troubled.  She befriends a wild dolphin and comes to realize that she and her new friend may hold the key to stopping the closure of her father’s dolphin research facility.

The film recent won two awards at the 2007 International Family Film Festival: Best Drama and Best Child Actor in a Supporting Role for Carly Schroeder. The movie also won a Silver Award in the new Coming of Age category at the Houston Film Festival.

Residents of the United States can visit the official movie website to win free movie passes.

Eye of the Dolphin is a feel-good movie for all ages.  It is very unlikely that this one won’t put a smile on your face.

The movie trailer can be found here.

Disrupted Horizon

The statistics provided by Disrupted Horizon, the Business 3.0 Consultancy are as follows:

1% of businesses know how to know what they don't know
4% of businesses know what they don't know
95% of businesses don't know what they don't know

The top statistic refers to those rare businesses – only 1%, in fact - who are aware of their shortcomings but know how to find out the things they need to know.  These companies are obviously the ones that grow and thrive and, ultimately, succeed.

The second statistic refers to the business that is aware that there are things it doesn’t know but doesn’t know how to take things further.

And, the last statistics refers to companies that think they know all they need to know and that, obviously, is a very dangerous to be.  It means that the business lacks something and that no one is doing anything about.  These are the companies that need a bit of outside help in order to keep things afloat.

As someone who has recently been looking into starting her own small business, I find these statistics to be very scary.  As I looked through the Disrupted Horizon website, I came to realize just how important it is to “know what you don’t know”!

Disrupted Horizon is a consultancy company that offers their Business 3.0 Health Check to highlight the places where businesses can make improvements.  From marketing and PR to distribution and advertising, it is amazing how many things can be tweaked to increase exposure and maximize revenue.

I found the Disrupted Horizon website to be interesting because of all the examples they gave.  It helped to make their statistics realistic to me and to “put a face” to the numbers.   I found their Land Rover Discovery example to be the best one.  It tells of how a disgruntled Land Rover owner had written about his vehicle woes on the internet.  This then showed up as one of the highest ranked pages on Google when the words “Land Rover Discovery” were entered into the search engine.  In other words, anyone who wants information about that product would possibly read the negative review first!  Obviously, that is not what Land Rover would want and I wonder how much business it has cost them.

It's all in the name

Teddy sat alone, staring blankly past his computer screen and through the open window of his quaint but cluttered home office.  Surrounded by stacks of well-thumbed magazines and a dozen or so takeaway cups with dried coffee or pop in the bottom of them, he felt confused and thoroughly mentally blocked.  He was sure that he’d been sitting there, still, for hours, when in reality he’d only been there about twenty minutes.  If Teddy had taken the time to think about it, he’d have known that because he could hear the lady next door calling her kids in for lunch.

What can I call it, Teddy thought to himself as he watched that little brat from next door continue to throw his baseball back and forth to his buddy despite the call from his mother.  What do you call a great idea that you’ve had and that you feel so proud of?  And the bigger question was: what name could possibly do it justice?

Teddy started to think about it deeply.  He raised his thumb to his lips and flicked his nail back and forth over his tooth, like he always did when he was nervous or concentrating really hard.  The name had to be memorable above all else.  It needed to be short and it definitely needed to intrigue people into looking into it further.  It didn’t really matter if the name didn’t describe exactly what it was, which in actual fact was a website that allowed users to get personalized news simply by logging in and choosing their preferences.  Users could also submit their own stories and highlight exceptional blog entries for others to check out.  And best of all, there was a ranking badge that users could put on their websites to fairly measure how interesting their story was to readers with common interests.  But Teddy knew that no name could describe all that and still be truly fun.

Teddy sat with slumped shoulders, feeling like this seemingly simple task had beaten him.  Nothing was coming to mind!

THOOF!

It hit him.  No, not the revolutionary, mind-blowing name, but the baseball.  Right between the eyes.  Teddy blinked madly, trying to refocus his gaze.  As he shook his head to try to alleviate the headache that was quickly forming, he spoke out loud, “catchy name though.”

“And,” Teddy added, “it works out really well because they’re my initials too!  Theodore Hemmingway Orlando Oswald Fullerton."

Sunny Vacation in the Bahamas

Planning a trip away when you have young children to consider is never easy.  Ideally, we’d want to be in an area that not only is accepting of children, but especially one that caters toward them directly.

Child-friendly beaches and planned activities for kids, as well as all the usual stuff for the whole family can be found in the Bahamas. I’ve found a listing of numerous hotels that offer the best in family accommodation.  Games rooms, pools, babysitting services, playgrounds and much more for the whole family.  The grown-ups might then decide to enjoy para sailing, scuba diving or wind surfing.

When I look at that picture from the Radisson Cable Beach & Golf Resort, I can’t help but want to book the flights right now!  Sandy beaches and water so blue that you can see right through it. Beautiful!

And the weather?  The website describes it as "Balmy but Beautiful", with average temperatures ranging between 27 and 32 Celsius.

I'm there!

Personalized Gifts for Children

I love original gifts.  I love giving and receiving something that no one else has.  Personalized items are the best gifts, I find, because it shows that you've put loads of thought, time and effort into it.  Often, it means that you've also put a fair bit of cash into it too.

Imagine your child receiving the gift of a book, personalized with their name.  It’s not just that the book will have the child's name in it, but that the child stars as the main character.  His or her real life friends star alongside the child in this book too.

If not a book, then give a personalized poem with each letter of the child's name describing a virtue or quality that can be admired.  Or a clock, a placemat, pillowcases, cutlery and much more.  All personalized.

Identity Direct provides these unique and fun gifts, and at reasonable prices too.  They ship to the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.  From the drop-down menu on their main page, you simply choose your country so that your currency of choice is displayed.  Then choose from their many themes, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Sesame Street, Cars, Winnie-the-Pooh and Ratatouille, to name a few.  Generally, the price per item is between $10 and $20 Canadian, although a few select items run higher than that.

Ordering through their secure website is easy, but Identity Direct also provide a phone number for those who prefer the personal touch.  They accept Visa and Mastercard.  And if you live in one of the above-mentioned countries, just send Identity Direct an email to receive a free catalogue.

A good night's sleep

I used to work for a company that did customer service for other companies.  We ran a large call centre and took calls for various different organizations.  Everything from mail order companies to weight loss programs to baby clubs.  We also warehoused products on behalf of these companies and shipped items as required.  One of the companies we supported was one that supplied orthopaedic pillows, meant to properly support the back, neck and head during sleep to guarantee a better night’s rest.

The problem with these specific pillows was that they came in different sizes and you had to choose the one that best suited your stature.  You would see your chiropractor and he or she would recommend the best size for you.  Being an employee of the company, I guessed my size and made my purchase.  I must say that I really liked the pillow.  It was shaped in a way that the extra support for my neck was obvious.  I did feel, however, that the sizing wasn’t quite right, but I couldn’t correct it as 1) I had already bought the pillow and 2) I didn’t really know which size would be better.

The Mediflow Pillow solves that problem right away.  It has a soft, hypoallergenic polyester filling supported by a water pouch.  The pouch is easy to fill and can be adjusted to suit your own personal comfort level.  Soft for stomach sleepers, medium for back sleepers and firm for size sleepers.

The John Hopkins School of Medicine tested pillows in a clinical trial and found the Medifow Pillow reduced neck pain, reduced the number of times the person woke during the night and provided the most luxurious, rejuvenating sleep.

The Mediflow Pillow is simply the most comfortable pillow you will ever own.
