Quiet House & Boring Old Farts
The girls are back in England for two weeks for their mother's wedding. She and her new husband will be honeymooning in India. Of course, their arrangements were made long before disaster struck the region and authorities are not telling tourists to stay away, so it looks like the honeymoon is going to go ahead as planned and the girls will be returning here.
The house is really quiet without the girls here. With Jake in bed right now and Stephen painting Sarah's bedroom in the basement, I'm sure I'd hear a pin drop. And speaking of Jake: I went from having three live-in babysitters to having none!! How did that happen?
The girls flew out of Montreal on New Years Eve. In fact, with their flight due to take off at 11:05pm, they got to celebrate the New Year while at 30,000 feet! Apparently, the flight crew offered a small cup of complementary wine for the occassion and I think they even had a countdown.
Stephen and I were our usual boring selves this New Years. With having to bring the girls into Montreal (just over an hour away from home), we decided to spend the night at my Mum's place. We stopped by there first and let her say goodbye and Bon Voyage to the girls. At the same time, we dropped Jake with her so that she could get him to bed at a reasonable time. After seeing the girls off at the airport, Stephen and I discussed going out and spending the arrival of the New Year over a beer. We both liked the idea and, by that time, were sure that Jake would be asleep.
But he wasn't. He was wide awake and crying. So we went in and sat down. He finished his bottle and fell asleep in my arms. Tucking him in around 11pm, we couldn't have been bothered to go out. We joined my Mother and Stepfather in front of the TV to watch Dick Clark's New Years celebrations from Time Square, New York. But Dick apparently had a stroke recently so it was being hosted by Regis Philbin instead. Hmmm... I prefer Dick.
Finally!
Normally, I keep myself 'permanently' signed in to 20six. By that, I mean that I ticked the box that says something like "remember me on this computer" and deposits a yummy little cookie on my hard drive. Having cleared everything out recently and having to log on anew, I see that 20six have added an ingeneous little feature that means that you have the type the letters you see on the screen before you can leave a comment in someone's blog. For those not in the know, it means that only actual live human beings can now leave comments on our weblogs.
All I can say is: Finally! Thank you, 20six.
And I'd been wondering why I hadn't been getting any more of those damn things...
Stuffy Noses and Creative Impulses
Jake has got a bit of a cold at the moment. The symptoms don't really appear until just before bed though. All day, he's fine and chirpy. But in the evening, he's grumpy. He coughs and sneezes and even has a stuffy nose. Bedtime is fun (Ha!) because he sleeps for about hour before he's up again, crying and complaining and coughing. Then he's up again later in the night.
This has been going on for the last three nights. I'd like to say "poor kid", but it's tiring me out. Last night was a bit before than the two previous nights though, so let's hope that he's on the mend.
I've just put together a scrap book for Jake. Inside are all the cards that we got when he was born, along with the hospital cards from his incubator, the hospital bracelets that he and I wore, a bookmark with his name on it and the meaning of the name, scan pictures, etc. Now that that's complete (and it's looks great!), I've decided to make a fancy cover for it. With some blue material and some felt. I'll post a picture when I'm done. You see, I've just made curtains for both Hannah and Sarah's new bedrooms and I'm feeling creative!
Mushy and Useless
I had another mushy-brained "post-pregnancy" moment today. Stephen says that he's noticed a significant increase in my... shall we say, blonde moments, since I had Jake. I'm not blonde (please, I don't think that all blondes are airheads... well, no more so than brunettes anyway) and I have my fair share of duuuuuuh episodes but pregnancy and motherhood, Stephen says (jokingly, of course), have made my brain mushy.
I used to be going to work, designing menus and posters. I used to create websites in my spare time and I certainly considered myself as intelligent and quick-witted as the next person. But since Jake arrived, my computer time has been less and less. As he becomes more demanding, my time just dwindles away. I don't go to work anymore either. And websites? Well, I've updated a few, but haven't designed anything new in ages.
My brain is, well, mushy.
I WANT MY BRAIN BACK!
